Getting there

Finding the Mountain Is Easy

Niushou Mountain Cultural Tourism Zone sits at No. 18 Ningdan Avenue (宁丹大道18号) in Jiangning District, south of downtown Nanjing. Any taxi or ride-hailing driver will recognize the attraction's name — show the driver "牛首山文化旅游区". From the city center expect roughly a 30–40 minute drive depending on traffic.

  • Taxi / ride-hailing — the easiest door-to-door option. Cars stop at the designated car park; a free shuttle continues to the west entrance, where tickets are sold.
  • Metro & bus — Nanjing's metro lines reach the Jiangning side of the city; combine with a short taxi hop or a bus to the entrance area for the budget route.
  • Entrances — the eastern entrance sits by Peach Blossom Creek; the west entrance is the usual arrival point for ride-hailing. Both connect to the shuttle system.
  • English-friendly — English maps are available, tour guides can be booked, and e-ticket entry works smoothly for international travelers.

Suggested one-day route

A Route That Hits Every Highlight

A tried-and-tested order for first-time visitors — flip it freely, but keep the early palace magic.

1

Morning · Usnisa Palace

Ride the shuttle up and enter at 08:30–09:00, while the blue hall and relic hall are still quiet. This is the sight you came for.

2

Underground Palace

Descend into the six-floors-deep palace built inside the old mine pit — budget a good hour for the dome chambers.

3

佛尼萨佛塔

Shuttle or walk to the mountain's ancient heart — the brick pagoda above the twin peaks and the millennium-old temple.

4

Lunch on the Mountain

Food outlets are spread across the zone — reviewers praise both the range and the prices compared to city attractions.

5

郑和文化园

Pay respects at the tomb of the great Ming navigator — a peaceful, shaded corner families consistently enjoy.

6

Afternoon · Peach Blossom Creek & Yinlong Lake

End by the water: the stream, the lake and (in season) the blossoms — the classic "Spring Niushou" farewell.

Make a day of it

Pair the Mountain with Nanjing

Back in the city, these classics complete a perfect Nanjing day.

Confucius Temple & Qinhuai River

The lantern-lit riverfront of Fuzimiao is Nanjing at its most atmospheric — an easy evening contrast to a mountain morning.

Zhonghua Gate

The greatest surviving city-gate castle in China, guarding the old capital's wall — history you can walk through.

Laomendong Old Town

Restored lanes of teahouses and snacks under the city wall — the perfect place to refuel after the mountain.

常问问题

Quick Answers Before You Go

How long does a full visit take?

Plan for half a day at minimum; the official recommendation runs to a full day. Reviewers report spending entire days here with kids, and still leaving sights unexplored. The shuttle bus is what turns "too big" into "pleasantly big".

Can I see the skull relic of the Buddha?

The relic is enshrined at the Usnisa Palace and brought out for public worship on special Buddhist festivals only — for the exact schedule, call the attraction at +86-4001656363 before your visit. The palace and its halls are visitable every day.

Is it worth it for adults without kids?

Absolutely. Reviewers compare the palace's interior to Gaudí's Sagrada Família and call the mountain "breathtakingly beautiful" — architecture, history and landscape at any age. Come on a weekday and take your time.

Is there food inside the zone?

Yes — reviewers describe food available everywhere across the park, plus restaurants near the entrances. Bring a water bottle for the climbs and save room for the restaurants on the way down.
